  • History

Sometime around 1945 the contractor’s association known as the Air Conditioning and Sheet Metal Contractors Association was formed with the help of contractors such as Frank Turner, Southwest Manufacturing; Bob Bayless, Valley Sheet Metal; Frank Harmonson, The Frank Harmonson Company and Don Haskins, The Johnson Brothers.  Shortly thereafter the association saw Howard Kraft, Climate Control; Paul Engebretson, Conditioned Air and Gerald Hughes and Don Petty, then partners of P & H Sheet Metal, come aboard as members and leaders.

In 1953 the Arizona Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Contractors Association and the Air Conditioning and Sheet Metal Contractors Association joined together to form the Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Sheet Metal Contractors Association of Arizona Inc.  The first Board of Directors was elected and a full time Executive Director was hired.

In 1955 the Association name was changed to the Air Conditioning Contractors of Arizona.  The Bylaws for Air Conditioning Contractors of Arizona were written in September 1955 and membership dues was based on the number of employees and ranged from $15 to $27.50 per year.  At that time all members were union contractors.

In 1962 an Agreement and Declaration of Trust was entered between Air Conditioning Contractors of Arizona and Local Union #359 to establish the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Trades Industry Program (SMACTIP) for union contractors. Air Conditioning Contractors of Arizona and SMACTIP shared many items.   Staff, office space, equipment to name a few.  To ensure the integrity of both Air Conditioning Contractors of Arizona and SMACTIP, language was added to the Air Conditioning Contractors of Arizona Bylaws which in essence kept SMACTIP (Union contractors) in control of all union sponsored activities that come under Air Conditioning Contractors of Arizona’s wing and the Air Conditioning Contractors of Arizona Board of Directors in control of all Air Conditioning Contractors of Arizona sponsored activities.  In essence, Air Conditioning Contractors of Arizona was two separate entities that share various benefits.

As the dynamics of the Union/Non-Union situation changed over the years Air Conditioning Contractors of Arizona changed with it.  The membership in Air Conditioning Contractors of Arizona now is both union and non-union HVACR contractors, suppliers, manufacturers and companies who do business with HVACR contractors.   Currently Air Conditioning Contractors of Arizona has many members who may or may not be associated with a local union.

In April 2003, Air Conditioning Contractors of Arizona and SMACTIP split into two separate entities.  Also in 2003, Air Conditioning Contractors of Arizona became a chapter of Air Conditioning Contractors of America, a National Association. In April 2015, Air Conditioning Contractors of Arizona severed it's affiliation with the national association and again became the premier Arizona state association serving the HVACR industry.

In 2015, Air Conditioning Contractors of Arizona again moved to expand and move the organization in an exciting and inclusive direction.  The name has been changed to Mechanical Trade Contractors of Arizona and membership expanded to include the plumbing, sheet metal, piping and energy management industries.  All of these industries work hand in hand with the hvac-r industry so this change made sense to facilitate networking and business relationships.

Past presidents of ACCA include:  Jerry Hughes, Paul Engebretson, William Goettl, Paul Schoonover, Jim Scott, Dick Lorton, Orrie Scott, Howard Kraft, Robert L.
